The two components work together, and neither achieves much without the other.
The trays control where the gel goes. A tray moulded to your teeth from an impression sits against every surface with an even layer of gel held in contact. Generic strips and boil-and-bite trays do not follow the contours of individual teeth, which means the gel contacts the flat front surfaces and misses the curves near the edges and between teeth. That is the source of the patchy result patients often report from over the counter products, where the middle of each tooth lightens and the margins stay dark.
The gel does the actual work. Prescription strength whitening gel contains a considerably higher concentration of active ingredient than retail products, which is why it produces a greater shade change and reaches it faster. The higher concentration is also why it is dispensed through a dental office, since it should be used in a properly fitted tray under a dentist's guidance rather than applied freehand.

How Your Custom Whitening Trays Are Made and Used
Getting set up takes two short appointments, and then the whitening happens at home over the following couple of weeks.
Examination and shade assessment
Our dentist examines your teeth and gums, checks for decay, erosion, recession and existing restorations in the visible teeth, and identifies what type of discolouration you have. Your current shade is recorded against a reference guide so the change is measurable rather than a matter of impression. This is also when expectations get set honestly.
A cleaning first if you need one
Whitening works on the enamel, so surface deposits sitting on top of it get in the way. Where a cleaning is due, having it before you start means the gel contacts the tooth directly and lightens evenly.
Impressions of your teeth
Impressions or a digital scan capture both arches in detail. Accuracy here determines how well the finished trays hold gel against every surface, so it is not rushed.
Tray fabrication
Your trays are made from the impressions and trimmed precisely to your gumline, close enough to hold gel against the full height of each tooth without spilling onto the tissue.
Fitting and instructions
You come back to try the trays, and our dentist checks they seat properly and sit comfortably. You are then shown exactly how much gel to use, which is less than most patients expect, since overfilling pushes material onto the gums and causes irritation without whitening anything further. You will also be told how long to wear them each day and how many days to continue.
Whitening at home
You wear the trays for the period our dentist specifies, typically once daily across one to two weeks. The shade lifts gradually, which is part of the appeal, since you can stop when you reach a result you are happy with rather than being committed to a fixed endpoint.
Follow up
Our dentist checks your progress, compares against your recorded starting shade and advises whether to continue, pause or stop. Any sensitivity is addressed at this point, usually by shortening wear time or adding a desensitizing gel.
Keeping your trays
The trays are yours. Touch up gel can be dispensed whenever you want to refresh the shade later, which makes maintenance straightforward and considerably cheaper than starting over.
How to Maintain Your Whitening Results
Whitening is not permanent, because the causes of staining continue after treatment ends. How long results hold depends almost entirely on habits, and the range runs from several months to a couple of years.
The first 48 hours after whitening deserve particular care, since enamel is more porous immediately afterward and takes up pigment more readily. Sticking to lighter coloured foods and drinks for those two days protects the result you just achieved.
Beyond that, routine cleanings do a good deal to maintain brightness by removing surface deposits before they build. And because you keep your trays, refreshing the shade later is a short course with touch up gel rather than a new treatment. Most patients find a few days of top up once or twice a year keeps things where they want them.
