Dental Emergency? Call Us First

The Appointment That Protects Everything Else
Plaque is soft for about twenty-four to seventy-two hours. After that, it mineralizes into calculus, commonly called tartar, and no amount of brushing will shift it. Once that hardened deposit sits against the gumline, the bacteria living in it keep the surrounding tissue inflamed, and inflamed tissue eventually loses the bone underneath. That is the entire mechanism behind most tooth loss in adults, and a professional cleaning interrupts it twice a year.
The exam paired with that cleaning does the other half of the job. Our dentists check every tooth surface, review digital images for decay hiding between teeth, measure the health of the tissue around each root, evaluate older fillings and crowns for cracks or leakage, and screen the soft tissue of your mouth for changes worth investigating. Nearly everything found at this appointment is found before it hurts, which is the only stage at which dental treatment stays simple.

What Regular Cleanings and Checkups Do For You
- Tartar comes off before it does damage
Hardened deposits above and below the gumline are removed completely, which resets the bacterial load in your mouth and gives inflamed tissue a chance to settle down. - Decay gets caught at the filling stage.
A cavity spotted on a digital image usually needs one appointment and one filling. The same cavity discovered when it starts throbbing often needs root canal therapy and a crown across several visits. - Gum changes get measured, not guessed at
Pocket depths recorded at each visit turn gum health into numbers on a chart. Movement in those numbers is visible long before bleeding, recession or looseness would ever prompt a patient to call. - Existing dental work gets inspected
Fillings, crowns, bridges and implants all have a service life. Finding a failing margin early means replacing a restoration rather than treating the decay that developed underneath it. - Oral cancer screening happens routinely
Survival rates for oral cancers depend heavily on the stage at which they are found, and a screening that takes two minutes is part of every checkup. - Fresher breath and a genuinely cleaner mouth
Not the main clinical point, but the reason plenty of patients look forward to the appointment. Polished enamel feels different, and persistent bad breath frequently traces back to bacterial deposits a cleaning removes. - Stains lift from the enamel surface
Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco leave surface staining that polishing removes. This is not whitening, since it does not change the underlying shade of the tooth, but many patients notice the difference immediately.

Findings, questions and next steps
When a Standard Cleaning Is the Right Treatment
- Gum pockets measure roughly one to three millimeters
- There is little or no bleeding when the tissue is touched
- Digital images show no bone loss around the roots
- Tartar is limited to the tooth surfaces and just below the gumline
Our dentists and hygienists will recommend periodontal therapy instead when the exam shows active gum disease, meaning deeper pockets, bleeding, tartar reaching down the root surfaces, or bone loss visible on imaging. A standard cleaning in that situation polishes the tooth while leaving the infection undisturbed below the gumline, so it is not the appropriate treatment even though it takes less time and costs less.
Patients who have completed periodontal therapy move on to periodontal maintenance, generally every three to four months, because the bacteria involved recolonize the root surfaces on roughly that cycle.
