Health history and updates
Our team reviews medications, medical changes and anything new since your last appointment. Blood thinners, immune conditions, pregnancy, diabetes and medications causing dry mouth all change how the visit is handled, so this step is not a formality.
Digital images as needed
Images are taken at intervals matched to your risk rather than automatically every time. They reveal decay between teeth, bone levels around the roots and infection at root tips, none of which is visible during a visual check.
Gum measurements and charting
A small instrument records the depth of the space between each tooth and the surrounding tissue, along with any bleeding points and areas of recession. The numbers go on your chart and get compared against previous visits.
Tartar removal
Hardened deposits are removed from the enamel and just beneath the gumline using ultrasonic instruments and hand scalers. Ultrasonic tips break up heavy buildup quickly with water irrigation, and hand instruments finish the detail work.
Polishing
A gently abrasive paste smooths the tooth surfaces and lifts surface staining, leaving less texture for plaque to cling to over the following days.
Flossing and fluoride
Contact points between teeth are cleared and checked. Fluoride application follows for patients who benefit from it, particularly children, patients with a high decay history and anyone dealing with dry mouth or exposed root surfaces.

Every tooth is checked for decay, cracks and wear. Existing restorations are evaluated. Your bite is assessed for how the teeth meet and for signs of grinding. Soft tissue screening covers the lips, tongue, cheeks, palate and throat.

When a Standard Cleaning Is the Right Treatment
Most patients coming in for a routine visit need a prophylaxis, the standard cleaning that maintains healthy tissue. It is the correct treatment when:
- Gum pockets measure roughly one to three millimeters
- There is little or no bleeding when the tissue is touched
- Digital images show no bone loss around the roots
- Tartar is limited to the tooth surfaces and just below the gumline
Our dentists and hygienists will recommend periodontal therapy instead when the exam shows active gum disease, meaning deeper pockets, bleeding, tartar reaching down the root surfaces, or bone loss visible on imaging. A standard cleaning in that situation polishes the tooth while leaving the infection undisturbed below the gumline, so it is not the appropriate treatment even though it takes less time and costs less.
Patients who have completed periodontal therapy move on to periodontal maintenance, generally every three to four months, because the bacteria involved recolonize the root surfaces on roughly that cycle.
