Dental Emergency? Call Us First
A broken tooth can happen in an instant — a bite of something hard, a fall, or an old filling giving way. Suddenly you’re standing in your kitchen in Omaha, unsure of what to do next. Knowing the right steps before you call us can protect your tooth, reduce pain, and improve your outcome. This guide walks you through exactly what to do when a broken tooth strikes.
How to Tell How Serious Your Broken Tooth Is
Not every chip or crack is the same. A tiny corner fracture feels very different from a tooth snapped in half. Understanding the severity helps you act appropriately right away.
A minor chip may cause no pain at all. A crack that reaches the inner pulp can cause sharp, intense discomfort. A tooth broken at the gumline is a dental emergency that needs same-day attention.
Look for these warning signs that suggest a more serious break:
- Severe or throbbing pain when you bite down
- Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers more than a few seconds
- Visible bleeding from the gum around the tooth
- A large piece of tooth missing or completely loose
- Swelling in your jaw or face
If you notice any of these signs, call Whispering Ridge Family Dentistry right away. Dr. Falon Pulfer and our Omaha team are experienced in emergency dentistry and can often see urgent cases quickly.
What to Do Right Away — Before You Call Us in Omaha
The moments right after a break matter. Taking smart first-aid steps can protect your tooth and keep discomfort manageable. Here is what we recommend before you reach our office.
Rinse your mouth gently. Use warm water to clean the area. Do not scrub or probe the broken tooth with your finger or tongue.
Control any bleeding. Apply light pressure with clean gauze or a damp tea bag for about ten minutes. Most minor gum bleeding stops on its own.
Save any pieces. If a large fragment broke off, keep it moist. Place it in a small container of milk or saliva — not plain water. Bring it to your appointment.
Manage the pain. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can reduce inflammation and discomfort. Dental wax from a pharmacy can temporarily cover a sharp edge that irritates your cheek or tongue.
What You Should Avoid After Breaking a Tooth
Just as important as knowing what to do is knowing what NOT to do. Certain actions can make the damage worse or introduce infection.
- Do not bite on the broken tooth. Even soft foods can worsen a crack or fracture.
- Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks. Extreme temperatures irritate exposed dentin or pulp tissue.
- Do not use super glue. It seems tempting, but it can damage the tooth surface and complicate treatment.
- Skip aspirin directly on the gum. Placing aspirin against soft tissue causes chemical burns.
- Do not ignore it. A crack that seems minor can deepen quickly without treatment.
Delaying care often turns a simple repair into something more involved. Getting to us promptly in Omaha is always the better choice.
What Treatment Options Might You Need?
Once you arrive at Whispering Ridge Family Dentistry, Dr. Pulfer will examine the tooth and take X-rays. The right treatment depends entirely on the location, depth, and severity of the break.
For minor chips, dental bonding or a simple restoration often solves the problem in one visit. More significant damage may call for a dental crown procedure, which caps the tooth and restores full function and appearance.
If a break extends into the inner pulp, we may need root canal treatment before placing a crown. This removes infected tissue and relieves deep pain. Our team explains every step so you always know what to expect.
If a tooth cannot be saved, extraction may be the safest path forward. After healing, dental implants offer the most natural-feeling, durable replacement option available today. Dr. Pulfer will walk you through all your options so you can make a confident, informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a broken tooth heal on its own?
No. Teeth cannot regenerate or repair themselves. Even a small chip needs professional evaluation to prevent the crack from deepening, causing pain, or leading to infection over time.
Is a broken tooth always a dental emergency?
Not always. A minor chip with no pain can typically wait for the next available appointment. However, severe pain, bleeding, swelling, or a tooth knocked out completely should be treated as a same-day emergency.
How long can I wait to see a dentist after breaking a tooth?
Ideally, contact your dentist the same day. For minor chips without pain, within 24 to 48 hours is reasonable. For painful breaks or signs of infection, do not wait — call immediately for emergency care.
Will I need a crown after breaking a tooth?
It depends on the severity. Small chips may only need bonding or smoothing. Larger breaks that compromise the tooth’s structure often require a dental crown to restore strength, protect the remaining tooth, and prevent further damage.
What if my child breaks a tooth?
Treat it with the same urgency as an adult break. Gently rinse the area, control any bleeding, and call your dentist right away. If a baby tooth was knocked out, do not try to reinsert it—but bring your child in for evaluation to ensure no damage occurred to the underlying permanent tooth.
